BOMBFIRE Night

Started by: mollie m (7180)

And I use the term advisedly.

It all started here last night and went on for ages, but now they're at it again.

When were the gentle Roman Candles. Catherine Wheels and Jumping Jacks replaced with what sound like 40lb bombs?

It's awful, especially for folk who are of a nervous disposition, or those that have been in situations where real bombs have been going off?

Last night, my little cat went into hiding but, since they started tonight, I've been unable to find her in the house, so she must have gone outside much earlier and will by now be terrified.

Any thoughts on these mega-bomb fireworks?

Literally a few seconds ago, a couple of bombs went off around here, and they were the loudest ones I have ever heard

When I was young, bommy neet was on the 5th November, now it is on the 3rd, 4th and 5th November, with dress rehearsals held on the 4 weeks prior to these dates.

Yes, these seem to be bigger and louder this year. There's really no need for it.

Will be unpleasant for ex squaddies who are suffering from PTSD. Of course they know it's only fireworks. Unfortunately, the autonomic nervous system does not care about what you know, it will reproduce the stress response once associated with such sounds.

I wonder how they find the money for the fireworks, everyone is finding living hard yet go out and spend on setting fire to large amounts of money for a boom,

A lot of this annual "celebration" is unknown to the revellers of its origin..I don't want to be a wet lettuce..but My humble opinion is to restrict the general sale of fireworks and have organised events. I don't have any animals any more...my dogs were petrified..The n'eer do wells of Merseyside have attacked council workers who are dismantling dangerous bonfires...similarly in GMP..If only they celebrated the Armistice in the same way.

Ena, I agree about the ex-Squaddies, whom I loosely included in my previous comment. That sort of nightmare never leaves you.

Tommy, I hope my little puss cat will be okay as well.

I know how ridiculous this may sound, but shortly after leaving Northern Ireland in 1975 I was in Pemberton shopping. I thought I was perfectly okay but suddenly, a car backfired directly opposite me, and I dropped down on the ground. Folk must have thought I was crackers, but it was instinctive, but I felt silly afterwards.

For years it's been being said that fireworks should only be sold to those responsible enough to have a Firework Display in an appropriate place, and to have trained medics standing by in case of accident or injury.

The Fireworks Shop on Beech Hill Avenue is open every day of the week, and I'm sure they don't care who they sell them to.

Its time fireworks were banned for sale to the general public,. Some fireworks are flying bombs Next year which is too late they have to cut the noise limit from 120db to 90db. Like Tom says where do they get the money for a few seconds of light and noise. The idiots who set fireworks off in daylight are the worse or the car idiots who go round at all sorts of daft hours setting fireworks off

They should be banned to the general public. It's so different now since we were kids. It was meant as an evening of fun, and the burning of poor old Guy Fawkes, who didn't even dream up the Gunpowder Plot. I bet there aren't any kids today who know anything about the plot which Robert Catesby instigated, and all poor Guy did was guard the gunpowder barrels in the basement of the House of Lords, and the only one captured at that time, but was never burned to death, so the meaning of the original plot has been lost on the youth of today.

P.S: Me little cat just came in, thank goodness.

Bombs did someone mentioned bombs well i know a lot about them....
well for me it's not the noise of the bomb what is frightening when it lands because you know that you have not been hit it's the siren it's very loud and eerie when it go's off and then the wait... i wonder if it was the same hearing the buzzing with the V1 in WW2 ??
I thought that burning the guy was all about burning a catholic...??

The days of kids collecting for a bomfire and their parents buying the nice colourful fireworks have gone.

Now we have kids for want of better word who are only interested in explosive fireworks and upsetting elderly people and animals or throwing them at the Police and other emergency service workers.

These kind of fireworks should be banned and anyone selling them or setting them off should be arrested.

I too agree there should be some sort of restriction on the sale of fireworks ,whilst holidaying in Hawaii it is illegal to buy them unless you pay for a licence from the authorities and itis strictly governed ,but then they don't have the bonfires like over here . They Just celebrate them on special occasions or events. Also they have not to be over a certain decibel .

Whilst not actually disagreeing with the points made, nevertheless I am aware of the fact that only twice have I seen injury caused by pyrotechnics, and both times it was at a public display organised by the City Council.
